The First Unitarian Church of San Jose is a Romanesque building constructed in 1891 overlooking St. James Park. A $2 million renovation repainted and reroofed the bell tower, replaced the sanctuary carpet and chairs while keeping the labyrinth pattern, restored wooden theater seats in the balcony that include donor plaques, and replaced the front doors. The congregation has a long history of civic engagement, speaking against the 1933 hangings in St. James Park and opposing the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. The congregation has long been welcoming to LGBTQ members and displays a rainbow Pride flag.
