The Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in partnership with Holger Meyer Architekten, has been awarded the Midstad project in Frankfurt, aimed at revolutionizing inner-city spaces. Located on the historically significant Zeil, the project will rehabilitate a 35,000 m² existing department store into a ten-story complex that merges shopping, leisure, work, and culture. The design envisions preserving retail functions while adding educational facilities and residential apartments, with a focus on accessibility and visibility. Key features include new entrances, a light-filled passageway, and the incorporation of sustainable materials such as mass timber, striving to create a lively urban experience.
Adding new entrances and improving the building's permeability are crucial aspects of the Midstad project, ensuring visitors can easily navigate through the reimagined space.
The design reimagines urban living by combining shopping, work, culture, and education, fostering a multifunctional approach essential for modern city centers.
