"The building, on the south side of the Thames near Tower Bridge, was vacated by the Greater London Authority in 2021 in a bid by Sir Sadiq to save money. He said it would be cheaper for the GLA which includes about 1,400 officials working for the mayor and 100 for the London Assembly to move to a smaller building in the Royal Docks."
The former City Hall on the south bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge is undergoing conversion into mixed-use offices, shops, restaurants and commercial space. Many of the building's external glass panels are being removed and workers are operating on higher levels from cherry pickers. The redesign will feature open-plan garden terraces across different levels and a market hall beside the sunken-level Scoop seating area. The Foster & Partners building served as the home of London government from 2002 until the Greater London Authority vacated it in 2021. The GLA moved to a smaller site in the Royal Docks as a cost-saving measure.
