Los Altos residents are advocating for the installation of separate men's and women's restrooms in the library renovation. Current plans propose a restroom with seven gender-neutral stalls and communal sinks, along with two family restrooms. Concerns have been raised about privacy, personal comfort, and hygiene, particularly for girls sharing facilities with boys. There is reference to a similar incident at Hoover Elementary School, which reverted to gender-specific restrooms after complaints. Some officials support the idea that all-gender bathrooms should only exist alongside separate facilities.
"Shared stalls could result in less hygienic conditions than women typically experience in gender-specific restrooms, especially because men are used to using urinals rather than toilets," White said in a petition, which had 172 signatures on Friday.
The all-gender bathroom only works if you already have gender-specific bathrooms," Morris said. "I just don't feel comfortable, and I don't think it's safe for kids."
