Long delayed demolition of Peckham Rye's shopping arcade finally starts
"The long-awaited demolition of the shabby shopping centre in front of Peckham Rye station has finally started, with plans to open up the station space with a new public square."
"The shopping centre has fallen into a rather dilapidated state in recent decades, and as part of the wider redevelopment of the area, Southwark Council decided it would be better to demolish than to refurbish it."
"Once the square has been opened up, space will also be equipped for market stalls and lined with new retail units within the revealed railway arches."
"Throughout the works, Peckham Rye station will remain fully open, with passengers able to enter and exit via Station Way and Holy/Blenheim Grove."
Demolition of the shopping centre in front of Peckham Rye station has commenced, aiming to restore the public square that was lost in the 1930s. The dilapidated shopping centre was deemed unworthy of refurbishment, leading Southwark Council to opt for demolition as part of a £27m redevelopment plan. The project includes creating market stalls and new retail units. Throughout the demolition, Peckham Rye station will remain operational, and a separate £5m upgrade by Network Rail is also planned for the station.
