Joey Benton studied sculpture at the Rhode Island School of Design, focusing on material and form. After graduation, he refined his skills in metal casting and worked at the Judd Foundation, eventually becoming assistant director. In 1997, he founded SILLA in Marfa, Texas, emphasizing site-specific design across various practices. His remote studio encourages a resourceful approach, resulting in inventive and clear pieces. Benton prefers not to document his ideas, considering them personal secrets that may materialize in time, emphasizing the importance of emotional integrity in his work.
"If the emotional gestalt is intact, then the work has a voice from the beginning and becomes part of the conversation to its own completion."
"They're personal, and I don't talk about them - they're secrets. They float in and out, and hopefully the good ones stay and find a way into the real world."
