"This project is born as a retreat space, conceived from introspection. A personal and private spa in the mountains of Tapalpa, where the architecture deliberately renounces the idea of a facade: there is no gesture towards the outside, no frontal composition. The building seeks not to be seen, but to be inhabited."
El Retiro Spa is a 220-square-meter private spa facility located in the mountains of Tapalpa, designed by architects Carlos Mendiola and Andrea Arregui. The project represents a deliberate architectural philosophy that rejects conventional facade-focused design. Instead of creating a visually prominent structure, the building emphasizes introspection and personal retreat. The architecture prioritizes the interior experience and the act of inhabitation over external appearance or frontal composition. The design approach reflects a conscious decision to integrate the structure into its mountain setting without asserting a dominant visual presence. The project was completed in 2025 and utilized materials from local suppliers including Canteras Olympia, Canteras Barba, and Sukabumi stone.
