Plans to redevelop the California Theatre in Berkeley have been jeopardized after Gilbane Development Company withdrew from the project, leaving the California Theater Consortium unable to move forward. The project aimed to replace much of the historic theater with a new performing arts space and 211 housing units, including 22 affordable units. The theater, closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, had operated for over a century. The consortium remains committed to finding a solution to provide a permanent home for Berkeley's performing arts community, despite the setback.
The California Theatre Consortium announced that Gilbane Development Company has withdrawn from plans to redevelop the historic California Theatre into a performing arts space and housing.
Without their support, the Consortium stated it can no longer move forward with the development that aimed to create a live performance space and 211 homes.
The proposal included 22 affordable housing units and a venue designed for live performances and movies, meeting a critical need for Berkeley's arts community.
Although this project has ended, the California Theater Consortium remains committed to finding new ways to support the performing arts in Berkeley.
