Construction begins on major Galway wastewater project to enable development of thousands of new homes
Uisce Éireann is starting works this week on a major underground wastewater storage tank at Merlin Park east of Galway city. The project will add 950m3 of storage capacity to the Merlin Park pumping station and serve the local area. Site clearance was completed in late February, and pre-construction enabling works have been carried out in recent weeks. The upgrade is intended to increase the capacity and resilience of Galway’s wastewater network, supporting growth and development on the east side of the city, including essential housing delivery. The tank was approved by Galway city planners in August 2024. Funding increases for water and wastewater infrastructure are referenced as supporting continued investment and improved services.
"Uisce Éireann is beginning works on a major new underground wastewater storage tank at Merlin Park to the east of Galway city. The upgrade will provide an urgently needed increase in the capacity of Galway's wastewater network and unlock significant growth and development on the east side of the city, including the delivery of essential housing."
"Site clearance works were completed at the site of the development in late February, preparing the site for the construction phase. Further pre-construction enabling works have been underway at the site in recent weeks ahead of the start of the construction phase of the new 950m3 tank."
"The tank was approved by Galway city planners in August 2024 and will provide additional wastewater storage capacity to the Merlin Park pumping station and serve the local area. James Browne TD, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, said this represents a "major milestoe" for the city."
""The commencement of construction of this project is a major milestone for Galway city. This project will increase the resilience of the wastewater network to the east of the city while providing capacity for the growth and development of the area. "Public water and wastewater services are essential to facilitating housing delivery as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities.""
