Before & After: Dated Features "Dominated" This Kitchen Until a Makeover Brightened It Up
"We're a family that cooks, and since the kitchen is truly the heart of our home, I wanted to love the space where I spend most of my time and where we all gather,"
"I learned so much doing this project!"
"Before, the kitchen was a dated galley style with a tiny pantry and mustard yellow walls,"
Susan Rincon lives with her husband, three children ages 8 to 14, and her 70-year-old mother. The original kitchen was a dated galley with mustard-yellow walls, a large soffit, a tiny pantry, limited counter space, and a single fluorescent ceiling light. Renovation work removed the soffit, added can lighting, refinished floors, relocated the range to the back wall, installed more countertops and a statement hood, and built a new pantry. A washer and dryer were added to the kitchen. Much of the demo, cabinet installation and building, shelving, painting, and lighting was completed by Susan and her husband, while backsplash and countertops were professionally installed. Time- and budget-saving strategies included prepping materials, reusing cabinets, and hunting for secondhand matches.
