Scott Heltz and Shaquita Riley converted a 2004 school bus into a mobile home for their travels across the American West. Choosing a bus over an RV afforded them customization and sturdier construction. The renovation took three years and approximately $40,000, allowing for necessary amenities like a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Leaving New Orleans in 2023, they currently reside in southern Arizona, where they plan to build a home using shipping containers and live off the land, alongside their two dogs and two cats.
The biggest thing for me was traveling," Heltz, 55, told Business Insider. "I always wanted to travel."
The couple left New Orleans in 2023 and haven't looked back. Since then, Heltz and Riley - and their two dogs and two cats - have traveled the American West.
