"bare, and the doors and trim had been given the landlord special in an unflattering brown - probably to make it seem like wood,"
"I wanted it to be welcoming, eye-catching, and immediately let a guest know the kind of home they're walking into."
"I'd also sand the trim before painting, as the previous brown was clumpy, so I added a little to the landlord special there, but as a renter, it's sort of not my job to increase the value of the apartment, so it works for us."
"Wash them thoroughly after each use and dry them so they last longer,"
A renter transformed a bland hallway—originally painted a uniform, fake-wood brown—into a colorful vintage-inspired entry. The transformation began with blue and yellow base coats on walls, ceiling, and trim, and revealed lessons about priming and sanding trim to remove clumpy previous paint. Two years later the renter taped a wainscoting-like boundary three feet up and developed a floral motif inspired by a friend's mother's painted-lemon coffee table. The design was sketched in pencil, hand-painted slowly over weekends using leftover paint, and refined by erasing pencil lines. Careful brush cleaning and drying extended tool life and reduced supply costs.
