"Though we take it for granted in home improvement, what's underfoot has a huge impact on our quality of life. And when it comes to laminate vs. vinyl flooring, these popular options can mean a world of difference in moisture resistance, comfort, and good looks. In other words, the right flooring can be a subtle but critical way to improve the look, feel, and lifespan of the spaces in your home-and not just in the laundry room."
"Laminate flooring typically consists of four layers: a high-density fiberboard (HDF) as the main core layer which provides durability, with a balancing back layer on the base to protect against moisture and balance the floor," says Zack Clavin, flooring expert and tech and training specialist at the Swedish floor-care company Bona. "The top of the HDF is finished with a decorative paper or design layer and then laminated on top with a clear protective layer."
Laminate and vinyl flooring are affordable alternatives to hardwood with distinct compositions and performance. Laminate uses a high-density fiberboard core, a decorative design layer, and a clear protective wear layer, often sold as click-lock planks for rapid installation. Laminate delivers realistic wood appearance and durability but is more vulnerable to moisture and requires moisture protection in wet areas. Vinyl is made from plastic, offers higher water resistance or full waterproofing, and comes in many styles mimicking wood or stone. Vinyl tends to be softer underfoot and easier to clean, making it better for bathrooms and basements.
