Homeowners Are Sharing The "Stressful" DIY Projects They 100% Wish They Hired An Expert For
"I pulled up carpet and had to redo the stairs. Never again! It looks amazing, but the weeks of sanding, painting, and staining, plus all the dust throughout the house for weeks, were not worth the DIY!"
"DIY electrical work. We bought a house that had old knob and tube wiring in parts of the house. I figured that with my skills, I could replace the old wiring safely and complete the job over a long weekend. It took months to do it correctly, and I found out that my state required a permit to do it. I had to pay an electrician to come in and look it over before the inspector would sign off on it. The inspector found old glass fuses with tin foil over them in an old breaker box. That could have killed someone or burned the house down. I will 100% hire a skilled tradesperson to do the job next time. The reward is not worth the risk."
"We did a 17-foot diameter firepit/patio in our backyard last summer without trying to take extra days off. I bought a kit and an extension kit from Menards and had four pallets delivered to the house. Digging 8 inches of sod up was the worst. Those YouTubers who say it's so easy and to just 'cut and roll' are fucking lying. That, or they're working on new sod. Established grass with 10-inch roots does NOT come up so easily. Also, I highly recommend renting a compactor to level the rock. Best $50 ever spent."
DIY removal of carpet often uncovers additional work such as stair repairs and leads to weeks of sanding, painting, staining, and pervasive dust. DIY electrical rewiring can expose obsolete knob-and-tube wiring, require permits and inspections, prolong work for months, and reveal dangerous conditions like glass fuses with tin foil that create fire and electrocution hazards, often necessitating a licensed electrician. Large backyard projects such as a 17-foot firepit/patio demand extensive sod removal and base compaction; renting a compactor can save time. Time, hidden problems, permit requirements, and safety risks can outweigh cost savings of DIY; hire professionals for complex or hazardous jobs.
