Fire-Resilient, Fast, and Beautiful: Marmol Radziner's Prefab Solution for LA
"When Marmol Radziner started receiving calls from families who had lost their homes to the LA wildfires, they wanted to help. New homes needed to be built, and victims were overwhelmed. "Most people plan for years when building their own homes, but this tragedy thrust people into a situation they were not planning for," says Jared Levy, Senior Project Manager at the AD100 firm. "It made sense for us to develop a prefab solution.""
"which had a successful foray into prefabs during the early 2000s- one of their designs was even the first prefab to be featured in Architectural Digest. Though that division was closed in 2010 as the firm shifted its focus to custom work, they're now returning to prefabs with four readymade designs plus an ADU (accessory dwelling unit). All are designed to preserve the craftsmanship and warmth that define Marmol Radziner's work-and to fit the 40- to 50-foot lots characteristic of the affected areas."
Marmol Radziner created four readymade prefab home designs plus an accessory dwelling unit sized for the 40- to 50-foot lots common in affected LA neighborhoods. All homes use fire-resilient materials, including noncombustible metal siding, Class A fire-resistant membrane roofing, and dual-pane aluminum windows with tempered glazing. Automated shutters are being developed to close and protect homes during fires. The prefab approach reduces onsite time, potentially shortening construction schedules by 40 to 50 percent. Target pricing aims for about $800 per square foot, offering a more accessible alternative to custom homes.
