People Share The Buckwild Things That Happened At Church That Made Them Leave Their Religion

Churches are communities made of imperfect people, and individuals may choose to leave after experiences that feel harmful or misaligned. Leaving can stem from specific teachings, behaviors, or perceived misuse of religious authority. Some people stop attending after hearing messages they view as inappropriate or harmful to children, or after witnessing actions they interpret as predatory or unethical. Others leave after concluding that institutions can lose their purpose, shifting away from charity, emergency help, and spiritual support. Some people also decide they do not need others to interpret life’s meaning and instead focus on everyday living and personal responsibility, while reducing influence from those who try to control beliefs and actions.
