Kristina Dutton, in collaboration with the Patel Lab at the Marine Biological Laboratory, crafted a two-film series emphasizing the beauty and diversity of butterfly and moth wings. The first film utilizes macroscopic images to create an animation that connects the colourful patterns of the wings with digital pixels. The second film, 'Nanoscapes,' magnifies the wing structures using advanced microscopy technologies, unfolding the detailed topography that creates their distinct appearances. This project aims to reveal the hidden intricacies of these creatures and their wing designs, merging art and science.
In the first film, Dutton constructs a stunning animation from macroscopic images of the wings, drawing parallels between the small points of colour that give them their rich patterns and hues.
In the second, Nanoscapes, she draws viewers even further inside the world of the unseen, using light and electron microscopes to magnify images of the wings up to 50,000 times their original size.
