"As poet laureate, Masri will serve as a creative ambassador of the city, according to the city's website, and will have a variety of official duties, including composing an original poem inspired by or related to Berkeley, coordinating public readings and reciting poetry at city events, including those held by the Berkeley Public Library. Masri will receive a $5,000 honorarium for her two-year term spanning 2026-27."

In their official capacity, Ketema and Dunn will have the opportunity to read poetry at library events and city functions, will lead a community art project, and will take part in writing workshops across the city."
Hanan Masri, a kindergarten teacher at Berkwood Hedge School, is Berkeley's third poet laureate, succeeding Aya de Leon. Masri's two-year term runs 2026–27 and includes a $5,000 honorarium. As poet laureate, Masri will act as a creative ambassador, compose an original Berkeley-related poem, coordinate public readings, and recite poetry at city and library events. Masri will mentor Youth Poet Laureate Nolawit Ketema, 14, and Vice Youth Poet Laureate Rachel Dunn, 15, both Berkeley High 9th graders. Ketema and Dunn will read at library and city functions, lead a community art project, and participate in writing workshops across the city. The city launched its poet laureate program in 2017 and its youth laureate program in 2024.
