Ken Jennings Talks with Tyler Foggatt
"Hi everyone, I'm Tyler Foggatt, a senior editor at The New Yorker. And on behalf of the magazine, I am thrilled to welcome you all to the 26th annual New Yorker Festival. I'm thrilled to be on stage this morning with the unbelievably impressive Ken Jennings. [everyone laughs happily] There are many adjectives I could use, but impressive is what I went with. That works for anybody."
"I cannot be more excited personally. It's like, I mean, it's not, if you read the New Yorker and then suddenly you're on stage of the festival, it's a little bit analogous to watching Jeopardy! and then suddenly going on the show [everyone laughs happily] like the New Yorker has kind of risen up to surround me like Tron [crowd and Tyler laughs happily] as I always dreamed it would."
Ken Jennings grew up in Seoul after his family moved there when he was in first grade because his father worked as an international lawyer. He watched syndicated Jeopardy! on the Armed Forces Korea network, the only English-language channel available. By 2004 he had returned to the United States, worked as a software engineer, and competed on Jeopardy!, winning a record 74 games in a row and earning more than $2.5 million. A live stage presentation at the 26th New Yorker Festival characterized his achievements as impressive and prompted laughter and sustained applause. Jokes compared appearing at the festival to suddenly appearing on Jeopardy! and likened the magazine's presence to surrounding someone like Tron.
