April Aasheim: telling stories on pages and stages * Oregon ArtsWatch
"I didn't know who I was as a writer. I didn't know my voice or style. I was trying to be whatever writer I loved at the moment. You have to find authenticity, find your own voice. Marie's class gave me the ability to be a storyteller."
"HART's fully staged version of Pros and Cons just sold out its entire February run, before it opened. The company squeezed in another matinee performance - which also promptly sold out, with a waiting list of dozens. The journey that began in Buckley's class has taken Aasheim from prolific novelist to promising playwright."
April Aasheim's journey as a writer began in a community writing class taught by Marie Buckley at Hillsboro's Walters Cultural Arts Center and Brookwood Library 15 years ago. Before taking the class, Aasheim struggled to find her authentic voice and writing style. Buckley's instruction helped her discover her identity as a storyteller. Since then, Aasheim has written 30 books and two plays. Her play The Pros and Cons of Killing Your Husband, which originated as a novella in Buckley's class, sold out its entire February run at HART Theatre before opening, with additional matinee performances also selling out. The play draws inspiration from real-life incidents, including a story about her uncle giving her aunt a fishing rod as a 50th wedding anniversary gift. Aasheim now mentors other writers, paying forward the support she received.
