"The Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-US relations, Xi said, of the self governing island that China claims as its own. If mishandled, the two nations could collide or even come into conflict, pushing the entire China-US relationship into a highly perilous situation, he added. But at a state banquet in the evening the Chinese leader struck a more conciliatory note, insisting the US and China could manage the seemingly inevitable friction."
Xi Jinping referenced the Peloponnesian War and asked whether China and the United States can transcend the Thucydides Trap and create a new model for major-power relations. The Thucydides Trap describes how war often follows when a rising power threatens to displace an established one, as seen in Athens’ rise and Sparta’s fear. Xi’s use of the concept was linked to Taiwan, which he called the most important issue in China-US relations. He warned that mishandling Taiwan could push the two countries into collision or conflict and make the overall relationship highly perilous. At a state banquet, he also emphasized that the two countries could manage friction and pursue national rejuvenation alongside cooperation.
