Foreign minister Gideon Saar touted Israel’s return to Africa and Israeli media portrayed the move as a triumph. Many African states are seeking embassy reopenings. The move appears part of a calculated effort to pull African nations to Israel’s side as its global standing suffers. Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 66,055 Palestinians and leveled much of the Strip; some analysts see the Zambia outreach as aimed at weakening South Africa and eroding Pretoria’s influence within SADC.
