Hegseth addressed China, Iran, NATO, and Taiwan at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. He warned that China’s historic military buildup and expanding activities across and beyond the region could make it a regional hegemon. He said US relations with Beijing are better than in many years, but urged regional allies to increase defense spending to offset China’s growing power. He stated that a Pacific dominated by any hegemon would unravel the balance of power and that no state can impose hegemony while maintaining security or prosperity for the US and allies. Separately, the Iran war launched in late February has rattled global markets, triggered an energy crisis, and caused shortages of critical US munitions including THAAD interceptors costing about $12 million each.
