UK holds off joining Trump's peace board over Putin concerns
"We won't be one of the signatories today because this is a legal treaty that raises much broader issues. And we do also have concerns about President Putin being part of something that's talking about peace when we've still not seen any signs from Putin that there will be commitment to peace in Ukraine."
"That's why we are also clear we want to play our part in phase two of the Gaza peace process,"
"But we will have continuing international discussions including with our allies,"
"to come and make that agreement and that's where the pressure needs to be now"
The UK has declined to sign the US-proposed Board of Peace at the planned Davos ceremony due to legal concerns and worries about Russian participation. The Board's charter appears to omit explicit reference to Palestinian territory and could replace some United Nations functions. Several countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and Israel, have indicated they will join, and President Trump said Vladimir Putin had accepted an invitation, though Putin has not confirmed acceptance. The UK supports the 20-point plan to end the Israel-Hamas war and seeks to play a role in a second phase of the Gaza peace process, while continuing international discussions with allies.
