"India does not recognize the Taliban regime in Afghanistan nevertheless, it is set to welcome the Taliban foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, for a week-long visit starting on Thursday. The Taliban diplomat is due to meet India's External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and discuss counterterrorism, trade relations, and New Delhi's humanitarian and developmental assistance to Afghanistan. Muttaqi's trip, which was only made possible by the UN granting a temporary exemption to the travel ban imposed on him,"
"Muttaqi is also expected to urge India to allow the regime to post an official envoy to the Afghan embassy in New Delhi and seek permission to expand the staff of Afghan consulates in Mumbai and Hyderabad. India's careful diplomatic game For over four years, New Delhi has walked a strategic tightrope of maintaining humanitarian contacts with Kabul while keeping diplomatic ties limited."
India will host Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi for a week-long visit despite not recognizing the Taliban regime. Muttaqi will meet External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to discuss counterterrorism, trade relations, and India's humanitarian and developmental assistance to Afghanistan. The visit required a UN temporary exemption to a travel ban imposed on Muttaqi. Muttaqi is expected to request permission to post an official envoy to the Afghan embassy in New Delhi and to expand Afghan consulate staff in Mumbai and Hyderabad. India has maintained humanitarian contacts while limiting diplomatic ties since the Taliban takeover, including sending a "technical team" in June 2022 and holding meetings with Taliban representatives.
