"A court in Malaysia has dismissed former Prime Minister Najib Razak's bid to serve the remainder of his jail sentence at home. The Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled on Monday that a royal order, which would have allowed the measure, was invalid as it wasn't made in accordance with constitutional requirements. The court didn't dispute the existence of the order issued in 2024 by the then-king, but said the king should have consulted with the pardons board first."
"Najib Razak is serving time in jail for the diversion of some $9.9 million from a Malaysian investment fund into his personal bank accounts He was prime minister during the period when $4.5 billion was stolen from the state 1MDB fund The looting of 1MDB is one of the biggest corruption scandals in modern history The court rule Najib must stay in prison for the rest of his sentence"
The Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled that a 2024 royal order allowing Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence at home was invalid because the king did not consult the pardons board as required by the constitution. Najib is convicted of money laundering and abuse of power tied to the diversion of about $9.9 million into his personal bank accounts. He launched 1MDB in 2009; more than $4.5 billion was stolen from the fund between 2009 and 2013 and laundered through international accounts. Stolen funds financed gambling, a Hollywood movie, and luxury purchases. Najib's original 12-year sentence was halved and he is scheduled for release in 2028 at age 72.
