"The counterattacks the Iranian regime is now launching show that this is truly a fight for its own survival. This is why Iran will be trying to activate its network of regional proxies. If the regime realizes that this is its last stand, it will mobilize all resources and will try to involve all partners in this fight, and this includes the Houthis."
"During fighting in Gaza after late 2023, the Houthi group threatened merchant ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, one of the world's most important maritime routes. The Houthis also tried to fire rockets at Israel. The group stated that the attacks were intended to demonstrate solidarity with the Gaza-based militant group Hamas and to put pressure on Israel and its allies."
The Houthi group, officially Ansar Allah, controls large parts of northern and western Yemen since 2014. They have previously attacked merchant ships in the Red Sea and attempted rocket strikes on Israel in solidarity with Hamas during the Gaza conflict. The US, UK, and Israel responded with airstrikes against Houthi targets. Following recent US and Israeli attacks on Iran, observers question whether the Houthis will escalate their support for Iran. Experts suggest Iran may attempt to activate its regional proxy network, including Hezbollah and Iraqi militias, as part of a survival strategy. However, the Houthis currently appear to be holding back despite making critical statements.
