India-Pakistan ceasefire 'isn't long-term peace' DW 05/11/2025
Briefly

After four days of severe conflict, the US successfully mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan regarding the Kashmir dispute. Although this ceasefire signals a reduction of military confrontation, experts suggest it does not ensure lasting peace. US intervention provided an avenue for both nations to retreat without loss of face. Key diplomatic figures highlighted that pride played a role in both countries, as neither wished to be seen as the first to request a ceasefire; the US facilitated this process to alleviate societal tensions and reestablish a diplomatic status quo.
"The US has played a helpful role in getting Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire," Meera Shankar, India's former envoy to the US, told DW.
"Pakistan and India both needed a ceasefire but neither country wanted to be the one that asked for it first due to national pride and leaders' egos. The US helped provide cover for the decision," Husain Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador, told DW.
