Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev signed a peace deal aimed at resolving decades of conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. The deal, original in nature and announced at the White House alongside US President Trump, is intended to establish diplomatic relations and respect territorial integrity. Both leaders hailed the agreement as historical steps toward peace in the Caucasus. Tensions had initially risen in the late 1980s when the region declared independence. Azerbaijan regained control in 2023, leading to significant demographic changes.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed that "Today we are writing a great new history," emphasizing the importance of the peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated the agreement symbolizes "opening a chapter of peace" and is a success "for our countries and for our region."
President Trump noted that the agreement followed an extensive conversation, stating, "It's a long time, 35 years, they fought, and now they're friends, and they're going to be friends for a long time."
The deal aims to stop fighting, foster diplomatic relations, and respect each nation's territorial integrity, marking a significant change in the Armenia-Azerbaijan relationship.
