"Zelensky has said he hopes to soften a U.S. proposal for Ukrainian forces to withdraw completely from the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, a Russian demand that would mean ceding some territory held by Ukrainian forces. Just before Zelensky and his delegation arrived at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the U.S. and Russian presidents spoke in a call described as "productive" by Trump and "friendly" by Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov."
"Russia hit the capital and other parts of Ukraine with hundreds of missiles and drones on Saturday, knocking out power and heat in parts of Kyiv. Zelensky has described the weekend attacks as Russia's response to the U.S.-brokered peace efforts, but Trump on Sunday said he believes Putin and Zelensky are serious about peace. "I do think we have the makings of a deal," Trump said. "We have two willing countries. We are in the final stages of talking," Trump said."
Zelensky aims to persuade Trump to moderate a U.S. proposal that would require Ukrainian forces to withdraw completely from the Donbas, which would cede territory currently held by Kyiv. The U.S. and Russian presidents spoke by phone before Zelensky's visit to Mar-a-Lago, with Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov saying Putin warned a proposed 60-day EU-Ukraine ceasefire would prolong the war and urging a quick decision on Donbas land. Russian missile and drone attacks struck Kyiv and other regions, cutting power and heat, even as the U.S. president expressed belief both leaders were serious about reaching a deal.
