"The police marine area command said people should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas. Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf, a warning note said. Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage. Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket."
A 25-year-old woman was struck by a wave at Maroubra Beach around 4am on New Year’s Day, knocked into a tidal rock pool, and then swept out to sea. Police, including the air wing, and NSW Ambulance searched and found a woman’s body at about 5am; formal identification was pending but the body was believed to be that of the missing woman. Just after 6am emergency services responded to Coogee Beach for a man in his 20s reported to be in trouble, and police, ambulance, surf lifesaving and council officers joined the search. The Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning from Byron to the Illawarra and authorities warned people to avoid surf-exposed areas, coastal rock platforms and to take precautions when boating, including wearing lifejackets.
