A Russian court denied the appeal of Brittney Griner, maintaining a nine-year prison sentence while crediting each pretrial day as one and a half, effectively reducing the real-time term to about eight years. Griner was arrested at Sheremetyevo Airport after Russian officials said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage. Griner pleaded guilty in July, saying she packed the canisters by accident and that she had been prescribed cannabis for pain treatment. Griner appeared at the hearing via video from a Russian penal colony. U.S. officials have called for her release and described her detention as wrongful.
