Why the needless mystery from Australia over Cummins and Khawaja for second Test? | Geoff Lemon
"You could speculate about whether Cricket Australia deliberately prefers to be opaque about player availability and team plans, or whether it just has a deficiency in communications, but once again the fitness of players and the makeup of the XI is left to be inferred from the selection in the larger squad of 14 players for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane."
"Cummins is the surprise for not being included, with the regular captain and fast-bowling leader deep into his recovery from the early signs of a stress fracture in his back. The only public acknowledgment of the situation was a cursory line with the squad release saying that Pat Cummins will travel to Brisbane to continue his preparations. Suggestions from within CA support the view that this is all situation normal and that his recovery remains happily on track,"
Cricket Australia named a 14-player squad for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane, leaving fitness and final XI to be inferred. Pat Cummins was omitted despite apparent progress in recovery from early signs of a stress fracture. CA's public note said Cummins would travel to Brisbane to continue preparations. Internal suggestions indicate his recovery remains on track and he could join the squad in coming days. Earlier scans cleared in October started his buildup, and he was seen bowling in New South Wales nets, using a pink Kookaburra ball in apparent preparation for the day-night Test.
