Who was El Mencho, the former police officer who co-founded an ultraviolent cartel in Mexico?
"While less internationally famous than the Sinaloa cartel of the now imprisoned Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, the CJNG is a household name in Mexico, where it is known for its displays of ultraviolence and its big, military-style arsenal. An atmosphere of terror': the bloody rise of Mexico's top cartel The cartel, based in the state of Jalisco, has been one of the most aggressive in its attacks on the military including on helicopters and is a pioneer in launching explosives from drones and installing mines."
"An effort to capture El Mencho, real name Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, a 59-year-old former police officer, ended badly in 2015, with cartel gang members shooting down an army helicopter with a rocket launcher. In 2020, it carried out a brazen assassination attempt with grenades and high-powered rifles in the heart of Mexico City against the then head of the capital's police force and now the federal security secretary."
Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes (El Mencho) co-founded and led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which rose to become Mexico's most powerful criminal organisation. The CJNG is based in Jalisco and is notorious for extreme violence and a large military-style arsenal. The cartel has attacked the military, including helicopters, pioneered explosives dropped from drones, and installed mines. A 2015 capture attempt ended with cartel members shooting down an army helicopter; in 2020 the cartel carried out a grenade and rifle assassination attempt in Mexico City. Authorities regard the CJNG as a national security threat with vast funds, advanced weapons, paramilitary units and the ability to overpower local police. The DEA assesses the CJNG as as powerful as the Sinaloa cartel, with presence across the United States and major roles in cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine trafficking.
