Karki, born June 1952 in Biratnagar, earned a BA at 20, a Master's from Banaras Hindu University, and a law degree from Tribhuvan University in 1978. She became Nepal's first female chief justice in 2016. In 2017 an impeachment motion over a court decision on a police chief appointment was dropped.
