"There was a cautious sense of relief in Denmark and Greenland after Wednesday's high-level talks in Washington, D.C. The foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met on Wednesday with Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in what they hoped would clear up "misunderstandings" after Trump's repeated threats to annex the NATO ally. Rasmussen also said a 'high level' committee would be set up between the US, Greenland and Denmark to work towards possible security solutions."
""We didn't manage to change the American position. It's clear that the president has this wish of conquering over Greenland," he said. "And we made it very, very clear that this is not in the interest of the kingdom." The minister said a US takeover of Greenland, where Washington has long had a military base, was "absolutely not necessary." He said the issue was "very emotional" for the people of Greenland and Denmark, a steadfast US ally whose troops died alongside Americans in Afghanistan and Iraq."
High-level talks in Washington included US, Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The talks produced cautious relief in Denmark and Greenland that immediate US military annexation of Greenland no longer seems likely. The US position favoring transfer of Greenland remains unchanged. Denmark and Greenland made clear that transfer would not be in the kingdom’s interest and would violate territorial integrity. Agreement was reached to set up a high-level trilateral committee to pursue possible security solutions. The issue is emotionally charged in Greenland and Denmark given historical ties and military cooperation with the United States.
