US President Donald Trump said Washington was "going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not," and suggested force to secure the mineral-rich Danish autonomous territory. Greenland's five parliamentary party leaders declared they do not want to be American or Danish and insisted that the future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders. Denmark and European allies expressed shock, noting an existing US military base on the island. Trump cited rising Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic as justification for US interest. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any invasion would jeopardize NATO and post-World War II security arrangements.
