"We are now facing a geopolitical crisis, and if we have to choose between the United States and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark,"
"One thing must be clear to everyone Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States. Greenland does not want to be governed by the United States. Greenland does not want to be part of the United States,"
"unacceptable pressure"
"one way or the other."
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen declared a geopolitical crisis and stated that Greenland would choose Denmark over the United States if forced to decide. Nielsen emphatically rejected any notion that Greenland could be owned, governed by, or become part of the United States. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen denounced what she called unacceptable pressure from the United States and warned that the most challenging part may be ahead. The statements followed long-standing US interest in buying or annexing Greenland, with President Trump saying the United States would take it "one way or the other." NATO secretary-general Mark Rutte indicated the alliance would work to bolster Arctic security.
