A new prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia occurred on Thursday, part of ongoing negotiations following peace talks in Istanbul. Many exchanged prisoners had been detained for over three years, comprising National Guardsmen who protected Chernobyl and defenders of Mariupol. The Ukrainian government ensured that returning prisoners will receive medical and psychological care, while Russian soldiers were sent to Belarus for similar support. Despite unclear numbers involved in the exchange, this event has rekindled hopes for continued dialogue between the two nations.
"What kept me going was the hope that I was awaited at home," said one Ukrainian defender upon coming home.
Each will now receive full medical and psychological care, along with due compensation.
Ukrainian officials announce that most had been imprisoned for over three years, including National Guardsmen and defenders of Mariupol.
