"The pair had been part of a group of 10 police made up of local officers and members of the sexual offences and child abuse investigation team who entered a property in Porepunkah, in north-east Victoria on Tuesday morning to serve a search warrant. They were allegedly fired upon by Freeman, police said, who then fled into the bush."
"In a statement, police described Thompson as an adventurer and enjoyed all things outdoors, who regularly took his friends and colleagues on trips with him. They said Thompson had found a new purpose with his partner, Lisa, who he was with for six years before his death and planning in earnest for his imminent retirement. Together with Lisa, Neal had built a new home and had a long list of tasks planned after he knocked off work for the last time, police said."
An armed man allegedly opened fire on officers serving a search warrant at a Porepunkah property during a multi-officer operation. Detective Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, 35, died in the shooting; the suspect, identified as Dezi Freeman, then fled into nearby bushland. Ten officers, including local members and the sexual offences and child abuse investigation team, had entered the property. Thompson had served with Victoria Police since 1987 and enjoyed outdoor adventures while planning retirement with his partner Lisa. De Waart joined the force in 2018 and was on temporary assignment in Wangaratta.
