Venezuelans raising their torches to celebrate Maria Corina Machado's Nobel Prize
"We decided as soon as we found out,"
"They kept telling us there was nothing else to be done, that we had to accept it, until finally they asked us if we wanted to do it, and we said yes,"
"It was the day that changed all of our lives,"
The annual torchlight procession in Oslo has followed the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony since 1954, with hundreds honoring winners and symbolizing that light prevails over darkness. The Norwegian Peace Council, a coalition of 17 civil society organizations, announced on October 24 that it would not organize the procession in protest of awarding the prize to Maria Corina Machado, arguing her profile did not align with the council's values. The Norwegian Venezuelan Justice Alliance, a small group of Venezuelans in the Nordic countries, stepped in to host the procession. The alliance has a core leadership of no more than six members and about 15 volunteers. The alliance’s name was added to the official program of the celebrations, which aim to adhere to Alfred Nobel’s will.
