In the Asia Pacific region, only Australia and Indonesia currently operate the NASAMS defence, three of which the US said last year Taiwan would receive as part of a $2bn weapons sale. Used in Ukraine to defend against the Russian invasion, the system offers a sharp boost in air defence capabilities that the US is exporting to Taiwan as demand for it surges."
The Pentagon approved a nearly $699 million sale of NASAMS medium-range air-defence systems to Taiwan, with a firm fixed-price contract awarded to RTX. Contract work is estimated to be completed by February 2031. Fiscal 2026 foreign military sales funds totaling $698,948,760 were obligated for Taiwan. NASAMS has been battle-tested in Ukraine and boosts Taiwan’s air-defence capabilities. In the Asia-Pacific, only Australia and Indonesia currently operate NASAMS; the US previously indicated Taiwan would receive three systems as part of a $2 billion package. A separate $330 million approval for warplanes and parts was also granted.
