Unacceptable' for Greenland not to be in US hands, says Trump
"Donald Trump has said it would be unacceptable for Greenland to be anything less than in the hands of the US, reiterating his demand to take over the Arctic island, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, hours before high-stakes talks on its future. The US needs Greenland for the purpose of national security. Nato should be leading the way for us to get it, the US president said on social media."
"Trump's remarks came as the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers prepared to meet the US vice-president, JD Vance, and the secretary of state, Marco Rubio, at the White House to discuss the territory amid rising tensions after weeks of US pressure. The US president first raised the idea of a US takeover of Greenland in 2019, during his first term."
The US president insisted that Greenland must be under US control for national security, repeating demands to take over the semi-autonomous Danish territory. He said NATO should lead the effort and claimed the alliance would be stronger with Greenland, and he referenced a proposed Golden Dome missile defence. The remarks preceded White House talks involving Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers, Vice-President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio amid rising tensions. The US first floated a Greenland takeover in 2019 and has intensified pressure, including refusing to rule out military force. Denmark and Greenland reject sale offers and note a 1951 agreement allowing expanded US military presence. Several EU leaders backed Denmark's territorial integrity and Greenlandic self-determination.
