"The United Nations general assembly has voted to allow the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, to address next week's annual gathering of world leaders next week in New York via video link after Donald Trump said he would not give him a US visa. The resolution received 145 votes in favour and five votes against, while six countries abstained. The US has refused to grant visas for as many as 90 members of a Palestinian delegation"
"A number of western states including Canada, France, the UK, Belgium and Australia are due to formally recognise Palestine at the conference on Monday. The UK announcement is now expected to come on Sunday with David Lammy, the deputy prime minister and former foreign secretary, taking a lead role. He will emphasise that UK recognition assumes Hamas wil play no role in a future Palestinian government."
The United Nations General Assembly voted 145 to 5, with six abstentions, to allow Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to address the high-level week via video after the US refused him a visa. The US declined visas for as many as 90 Palestinian delegation members due to attend a one-day conference on a two-state solution and the UN high-level week. Canada, France, the UK, Belgium and Australia plan to formally recognise Palestine at the Monday conference, with the UK set to announce recognition on Sunday under conditions excluding Hamas from a future government. Iran's nuclear programme and possible reimposition of UN sanctions may prompt calls for military action by Israel; Benjamin Netanyahu will address the assembly on Friday.
