The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is reducing its 2026 aid appeal to $23 billion (19.7 billion) after receiving only $12 billion last year, the lowest in a decade. The appeal aims to save 87 million people and prioritizes the most acute life-and-death needs. The UN hopes to raise $33 billion to help 135 million people but expects shortfalls as countries shift funds toward defense and cut development aid. Aid workers are increasingly at risk, donor funding has fallen, and calls are made to redirect a small share of global defense spending to humanitarian needs.
