Ukrainian refugee Danylo Yavhusishyn wows Japan to win his country's first elite sumo title
"I am happy that I am able to achieve a goal of mine,"
"I only met him once in person and he welcomed me, even though I couldn't speak a word of Japanese,"
Danylo Yavhusishyn, ring name Aonishiki Arata, won the Kyushu sumo tournament via a tie-breaking victory over grand champion Hoshoryu, becoming the first Ukrainian to win a sumo tournament in Japan. He addressed fans in fluent Japanese and expressed happiness at achieving a personal goal. Yavhusishyn fled Ukraine after the 2022 invasion, arrived in Japan three years ago, and rose through the ranks at record speed, reaching the upper divisions within a year. He began sumo at age seven, became a national champion at 17, competed in junior world championships, and trained in Japan with Arata Yamanaka. The Japan Sumo Association plans a special meeting to consider his promotion to ozeki.
