UK hunger striker Heba Muraisi: I think about how or when I could die'
"Physically, I am deteriorating as the days go by. I no longer feel hunger, I feel pain, Muraisi said. I don't think about my life, I think about how or when I could die, but despite this, mentally I've never been stronger, more determined and sure, and most importantly, I feel calm and a great sense of ease."
"Even though the risks may be lifelong consequences or a devastating end, I think it's important to fight for justice and for freedom, she told Al Jazeera."
Heba Muraisi, a 31-year-old Palestine Action-linked remand prisoner, has refused food for 72 days and no longer feels hunger, instead experiencing pain. She reports physical deterioration while describing mental calm, determination and acceptance of possible death. Arrested on 19 November 2024 over alleged involvement in a break-in at Elbit Systems' UK subsidiary in Bristol, she is held at New Hall prison. If she survives, pre-trial detention will total at least eighteen months before a trial due no earlier than June, exceeding the UK's usual six-month limit. The hunger strike is part of a rolling protest involving eight activists; four remain on strike. British media coverage has intensified and the campaign is compared to the 1981 hunger strikes led by Bobby Sands.
