UK, Canada and Australia announce formal recognition of Palestine, with wave of Israel's allies to follow
"A wave of Israel's allies are announcing their recognition of the state of Palestine, as part of a wider manoeuvre designed to ostracise Hamas and challenge attempts by the Israeli government to erase the chance of a Palestinian homeland. But the delicate and partly symbolic move by as many 10 states, largely pioneered by the French government, has the potential to lead to a negative spiral of further confrontation amid fears Israel will respond by annexing parts of the West Bank,"
"Countries to join the list of 147 UN states that currently recognise Palestine are Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, the UK, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta and possibly New Zealand and Lichtenstein. Australia, Canada and the UK formally announced their moves on Sunday. Others will make the formal announcement on Monday at a special UN conference to revive the waning cause of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,"
Several of Israel’s allies are announcing recognition of the state of Palestine to ostracise Hamas and to challenge Israeli government moves that could erase prospects for a Palestinian homeland. Up to ten states, many following a French initiative, are expected to join the 147 UN members that recognize Palestine, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, the UK, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta and possibly New Zealand and Lichtenstein. The declarations are partly symbolic and timed amid domestic pressures, respect for the Jewish new year, and backlash from Israel and hostage families. The moves risk provoking Israeli annexation of West Bank territory, European trade sanctions, wider political isolation, and complications linked to US-Iran tensions.
