Up to ten states, many following a French initiative, are expected to join the 147 UN members that recognize Palestine, including Australia, Canada, Belgium, France, the UK, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta and possibly New Zealand and Lichtenstein. The declarations are partly symbolic and timed amid domestic pressures, respect for the Jewish new year, and backlash from Israel and hostage families. The moves risk provoking Israeli annexation of West Bank territory, European trade sanctions, wider political isolation, and complications linked to US-Iran tensions.
