Tunisia: Prime minister-designate announces government formation
Briefly

Tunisia's prime minister-designate, Habib Jemli, unveiled a cabinet of independent technocrats as he prepares for a confidence vote in parliament. Selected for his agricultural expertise, Jemli faces the challenge of garnering majority support from the 217-member legislative body following the October elections that positioned the moderate Islamist Ennahdha party as a leading political force. Despite attempts to negotiate with rival parties, public skepticism about the effectiveness of political establishments, especially in light of worsening public services, looms over the new government's prospects.
"I have depended [in forming the cabinet] on elements of competence and independence from political parties," said Habib Jemli after unveiling his cabinet proposal.
"The government must be endorsed by a majority of parliament's 217 members," highlighting the critical requirement for parliamentary support in the formation process.
"Anger at public services... has undermined the trust of some Tunisians in its political establishment," indicating underlying issues facing the new government.
"Ennahdha emerged as the country's strongest political force in Tunisia's October parliamentary elections," establishing the context of the new government's political foundation.
