Trump Says He Hasn't Been Briefed on Russian Fighter Jets Breaching NATO Airspace: I'll Have To Take a Look'
"Do you see that as a threat to NATO? the reporter inquired. Well, I'm gonna have to look at it, the president responded. They're gonna be briefing me in a short while. So, I'll let you know about it tonight or tomorrow. The reporter was in the process of asking a follow-up about the incursion when Trump interrupted. Well, I don't love it, the president said. I don't love it when that happens. Could be big trouble. But I'll let you know later. They're gonna brief me in about an hour."
"But, you know, I think the Russian threat sometimes is a little overstated. They have not had a lot of success, Whitaker stated. And so, you, know, to me, that points to a weakness in Russia. As their economy continues to falter, I believe their continuation of this war is going to be difficult."
Three Russian MiG-31 jets violated Estonian airspace for about 12 minutes and were forced to flee after interception by Finnish, Italian, and Swedish fighter jets. The incursion occurred amid intensified Russian airstrikes on Ukraine following the February 2022 invasion. Hours after the breach, the U.S. president said he had not yet been briefed, expressed concern, and indicated he would receive a briefing soon. U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker characterized the Russian threat as sometimes overstated, cited limited Russian successes, and linked continued Russian military effort to economic strain and growing difficulty.
